The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications and nominations for the positions of Surgical Director, Heart Transplant Program and Surgical Director, Lung Transplant Program to join its nationally ranked thoracic transplant team. Both Surgical Directors (for Heart and Lung) will have the great opportunity to build and lead within UAB’s Comprehensive Transplant Institute.

Patients benefit from the multidisciplinary collaboration among UAB specialists, who are recognized leaders in the treatment of end-stage organ failure and other conditions requiring transplantation.
Moreover, UAB’s transplant program is one of the busiest in the nation, performing more than 400 transplants each year. UAB has the largest comprehensive program in the Southeast, performing 100 more transplants each year than any other program in the region. Their longstanding record of experience and excellence provides their patients with the highest level of expertise and superb chances of survival after surgery.
The individuals chosen for the position will work collaboratively with the heart and lung transplant program Medical Directors and leaders within the Comprehensive Transplant Institute and Cardiovascular Institute to oversee all aspects of program performance. The Surgical Director, Heart Transplant Program will hold a faculty appointment in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Surgical Director, Lung Transplant Program will hold a faculty appointment in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. Both Surgical Directors would report clinically and administratively to the Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Institute.
The successful candidates will be responsible for clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the respective transplant programs and therefore they must have a deep knowledge of clinical practice; a strong commitment to training and career development in clinical research and clinical care; and demonstrated leadership and administrative ability in a complex clinical enterprise. The ideal candidate must hold a medical degree from an accredited school of medicine, be Board Certified, and be eligible for an Associate or Professor position with a tenure track appointment at UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Additionally, they should possess an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Alabama or the capability to obtain the license before appointment.
