Your Role and Key Responsibilities Goal: To instruct students effectively and prepare them for successful employment in the perfusion profession which helps assure the institution achieves its mission and educational objectives. The Instructor / Associate Director will provide didactic instruction, state-of-the-art simulation, mentor graduation projects and assist the director with special student related projects. The instructor / associate director must exemplify the Medical Centers Mission, vision and values; act in accordance with Vanderbilt University Medical Center(VUMC) policies and procedures; and promote the commitment of continued growth and innovation. Responsibilities: * Develop syllabi that clearly outlines the course requirements, rationale, goals, and objectives. Submits digital copies of syllabi and course handouts on Spark Learn for students to access. * Selects textbooks and other resources for the class. * Prepares class lectures and assignments to help students grasp course content and how it integrates with the overall student learning outcomes for the course. * Maintains a thorough, accurate and current knowledge of the subject matter taught. * Teaches classes in accordance to the mission, vision and values of the VUMC. * Creates a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation. * Documents students' attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes and or examinations that lead to a final grade. * Participates in educational activities in the SIMS Lab. * Submits course grades by the assigned date. * Is accessible to the student outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counselling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success, and life goals. * Maintains posted office hours. * Participates in and contributes to curriculum development by planning, developing, and evaluating new and existing courses and curriculum. * Participates in the development and implementation of academic policies, guiding principles, objectives and functions in accordance with the philosophy of the VUMC. * Participates in faculty meetings and staff meetings (monthly), and serves on committees as requested. * Continues professional development and growth according to personal needs and certification requirements. * Retains licensure in the State of Tennessee and active CCP. * Mentors senior research projects in accordance with graduation requirements. * Makes sure end of semester evaluation are administered and completed. * Represents VUMC positively to prospective students and supporters. * Inspire pride in workmanship and a professional attitude in your students toward their training and work responsibilities by your example. * Share responsibilities with the Clinical Coordinator and the Director when the need arises. Position Qualifications: Education Requirement Master's degree from an accredited institution. Certification/Licensure and Experience Must have and maintain a current certification as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist with the ABCP. Must be licensed or eligible for a State of Tennessee Perfusion License. Must have five (5) years of professional experience as a perfusionist. Must have two (2) years of experience as an instructor in an accredited educational perfusion program. Position Shift: Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm, but flexibility to work additional hours as needed is a MUST!
Department/Unit Summary Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology involves the study of physiology, pathology and associated equipment used to support and/or assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during medical procedures. The perfusion technologist prepares and operates the heart-lung machine and other sophisticated equipment as directed by healthcare physicians. The perfusionist measures various blood and other parameters to identify appropriate mechanical, pharmacological and thermal manipulation to maintain tissue viability. To perform these tasks the perfusionist must have a thorough understanding of the both respiratory and circulatory systems and be able to operate complex equipment. Additionally, the perfusionist must be capable of handling stressful situations, pay great attention to detail, communicate effectively, and be willing to stay abreast of new developments in the profession. While most perfusionists are employed by medical centers they may also be hired by individual surgeons, or perfusion companies. Clinical perfusion often requires on-call responsibilities at night, on weekends and holidays. Perfusionists also work in educational institutions as teachers and/or researchers.
