Health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and genetic counseling. Work as members of health care and research teams, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders, to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions, and to individuals participating or considering participating in research.
Serve as educators and resources for other health care professionals and the general public. Coordinate research projects related to the field of medical genetics, genetic testing and genetic counseling.
Performs duties to provide the highest level of research integrity, patient care and maximizes patient and research participant satisfaction.
Works under supervision of one or more Principal Investigators or Co-Investigators.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Ability to manage a research project, timelines and monitor project budget.
Deep and broad knowledge of genetics. Ability to read current literature and keep up to date on genetic discoveries.
Ability to tailor, translate and communicate complex information in a simple, relevant way for a broad range of audiences (researchers, research participants, patients and healthcare professionals).
Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness. Self-motivated with ability to complete research project objectives with minimal supervision.
Ability to dissect and analyze a complex problem.
In-depth knowledge of healthcare delivery and research process. Ability to develop research protocols, clinical translational protocols and policies; and identify relevant benefits of genetic services for discussion with insurance and other payers.
Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in workload, staffing and scheduling.
Demonstrates communication that supports a culture of Service Excellence.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires graduate degree in genetic counseling from an ABGC accredited college/university.
Work is typically performed in an office or an out-patient clinical/office environment.
Research projects often require regional and/or national travel. Weekend and evening hours may be necessary for certain research project activities.
