The Research & Quality Manager will play a key role in developing and implementing AOFAS research and quality programs and activities, in collaboration with the Director of Research. Activities include an exciting new AOFAS quality and research registry initiative. The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge of health care registries and/or clinical research. Relevant background or experience could include registries, nursing, public health, clinical research, orthopaedics, health care quality and safety, and/or health data analysis. Key qualities include enthusiasm for research and learning, curiosity, creative problem-solving skills, versatility, and adaptability to evolving programs and responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Outcomes Research Network (OFAR)
A significant portion of position responsibilities relates to management of OFAR, a major new clinical and patient-reported outcomes registry initiative for AOFAS members. The most viable candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
Health care registry, quality, or research project sustainability, business planning, and/or contracting.
Statistical planning for quality and research, data analysis and interpretation, report preparation, and/or analytics.
Member site recruiting, and site monitoring, support, and training; incorporating registry data collection into clinical workflows, data abstraction and monitoring; and/or data quality and integrity.
Research and Evidence Based Medicine
As appropriate to candidate skills, experience, and interests, as well as needs of the organization, duties may include:
Serve as staff liaison to Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) Committee and Research Committee, manage related project planning, implementation, and tracking.
Manage AOFAS Research Grants Program, including online application and review system; publicity; committee review coordination; progress and financial tracking; and impact documentation.
Coordinate research, and quality programming at Annual Meeting and AOFAS Specialty Day, webinars, and other member education opportunities.
Provide support for a variety of additional research, quality, and EBM program activities, as may arise, for example: research collaboration policy and procedures; research priorities updates; committee position statement background and development; Choosing Wisely® (CW) evidence based foundations, list development, and updates; grant-writing collaborations; preliminary evidence work for outcomes/performance measure/guidelines development; dissemination of committee work results via journal articles and other media; research, grant, and funding source resources for AOFAS members.
The Research & Quality Manager will work closely with the Director of Research, and share duties as appropriate to skills, experience, and capabilities to support all AOFAS research and quality programs and activities and the mission of AOFAS. Examples of other duties include, but may not be limited to:
Create written content, reports, and presentations, and manage web content and workspaces.
Collaborate with AOFAS staff, volunteers and leadership, and external stakeholders.
Leverage existing technology tools; and identify, assess, and implement new tools as needed.
Provide customer service, information, training, and support, as appropriate, to member sites and/or staff on research- and quality-related technologies and services.
Assist as needed with: annual budget monitoring; research program planning and reporting; benchmarking and networking with other orthopaedic and medical societies, regulatory bodies, and professional associations to identify potential collaborations and new opportunities.
Manage and support a variety of other duties as assigned.

M.S. degree or higher, with a major in the life sciences, a health care-related discipline, and/or public health.
Research, clinical, orthopaedic, health care registry, EMR/EHR, and/or diagnostic and procedure coding experience.
Experience with tools for data collection and management, registries, and/or basic or advanced statistical analysis,
Working knowledge of HIPAA, HITECH, CMS PQRS/QCDR, FDA Device Regulatory and/or other pertinent regulatory requirements.HR@aofas.org
Experience with vetting, managing, and coordinating outside vendors.
Experience with associations or managing programs with staff and volunteer involvement.
Minimum of a B.S. degree in life sciences, a health care-related discipline, and/or public health, with strong research-related knowledge or experience.
Strong customer service and team orientation; ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and volunteers physicians.
Self-starter who works well independently as well as collaboratively; excellent time management, and organizational skills; detail-oriented.
Proficiency and comfort with a variety of technology tools, platforms and software, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Outlook, and 365; workbook and database software; virtual meeting tools; grants management software.
Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, including proofreading.
Ability to travel at least 3-4 trips per year; availability to lead and participate in early morning and evening conference calls and programs.
