The Department of Public Health Sciences (DPHS) is seeking a successful candidate to fill the position of Manager of the Data Management Unit within the Department of Public Health Sciences in the College of Medicine. DPHS is a large basic science department in the College of Medicine with a robust research infrastructure supporting many investigator-initiated studies. DPHS serves as the Data Coordinating Center for federally funded clinical research networks including sites located across the United States. In addition, the data management unit provides IRB-recommended clinical trial monitoring services to Penn State investigators. The manager will lead, manage, and mentor data management analysts, data managers, and data processors. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinical and basic science researchers, biostatisticians, project managers, research coordinators, database developers, applications programmers, and institutional research support staff to review research protocols and recommend appropriate data management procedures for implementation.
The manager will be expected to provide recommendations, organize, and write the data management components for Data Coordinating Center and investigator-initiated grant applications. The manager will develop cost estimates, budget justifications, and statements of work for data management resources. The manager will develop a data management infrastructure to effectively meet the needs of the research projects including standard operating procedures, innovative technologies to collect data and improve data quality, and a strong and effective team. The manager should be familiar with the current literature and government-issued guidelines related to data quality assurance and electronic data capture.
The successful candidate will collaborate with other DPHS managers and assist the senior leadership in developing plans for achieving strategic departmental or research-driven goals, making recommendations for operational changes, and overseeing adherence to and training of University policies and procedures. The manager will serve as the data management content expert to several Penn State groups such as the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) core of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the Penn State University REDCap Advisory Group, and the Research Quality Assurance Office.
The successful candidate should possess excellent communication and writing skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, experience using a data management application, and project management and managerial experience. This position typically requires a Master’s degree plus four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
